About Rudy

Rudy is a registered patent attorney who speaks the language of business. He has extensive experience as in-house intellectual property counsel for multinational conglomerates 3M and Emerson Electric. Rudy understands the achievement of business objectives requires more than merely obtaining or enforcing intellectual property protection. Knowing the challenges faced by in-house counsel, Rudy works hard to help alleviate these pressures, whether they come from the laboratory, accounting, legal management, or the boardroom. Companies with limited legal resources also benefit from Rudy’s practical business counsel regarding intellectual property issues.

Rudy focuses his practice on intellectual property portfolio management, strategic counseling, preparation and prosecution, licenses, patent opinions, due diligence, and enforcement. He has filed and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications for inventions in the technical areas of software, electronics, computer hardware, optics, and medical devices.

Having begun his legal career as a trial attorney, Rudy has substantial experience in intellectual property litigation and appeals. He has proficiency with trial preparation and briefing at both the trial and appellate levels, and he is often called upon for his extensive knowledge on the inner workings of the Federal Circuit. Rudy applies the lessons learned in the courtroom to the development of sound IP strategies and patent portfolios for his clients.

Active in various leadership roles in national bar associations, Rudy is often invited to speak on a wide variety of topics in intellectual property law, and has authored and co-authored numerous papers and law review articles. He is also a contributing author of the treatise Electronic and Software Patents: Law and Practice, published by Bloomberg BNA Books.

Rudy is an avid supporter of the arts, and mentors upcoming artists, musicians, and authors.

A former soccer player, coach, and coaching director, Rudy holds a National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America among other coaching licenses. He has written articles on soccer tactics and taught coaches the art of coaching youth players. His personal loyalty as a fan is pledged to the Chelsea Football Club.
